BOTANICAL ARK

Alan and Susan Carle

AUSTRALIA

Most people worry about the destruction of the world’s rain forests. Some people do something about it. One couple is on an admittedly eccentric quest to rescue the most useful plants of rain forests all over the world and keep them safe in a reserve protected from political turmoil, industrial polluters, and rapacious oil drillers. Working with no government or foundation funding, no independent means, and few able bodies other than their own, the couple combs rain forests in countries as far-flung as New Guinea, Malaysia, Cameroon, Mauritius, Borneo, Madagascar, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil, looking for endangered plants that could someday save the world. Guided by local shamans and healers and in the face of often fearsome local obstacles—including corrupt and sometimes violent policemen, not to mention tempests and floods—they discover plants just as they are coming into flower, and carefully collect and clean the seeds. Then they spirit the seeds home and plant them. Trees shoot up in a year or two. Fruits and flowers appear in months. Most everything that grows is edible. This magic garden is called the Botanical Ark, and it’s a world away.
