Chapter 4

A Month Later

Nash

“I missed you today,” I say, gazing at June over the dining table.

She arrived here a couple hours ago for dinner. Usually, I order out for us, but she insisted on cooking tonight. I have to admit, I enjoyed watching her whiz around the kitchen. She looked so at home it surprised me a bit. She made some sort of casserole that I’d never had before. It’s so good I’m on my second helping.

June looks up from her plate and tilts her head in surprise. “Really,” she questions.

“Yeah, really. You were so busy today we didn’t get to have lunch together.” I shrug. “I missed seeing you.” You sound like such a fucking sap, man. And it’s true, I do, but I really did miss her. I’ve never felt this before. This overwhelming urge to spend as much time with a woman as possible. It scares me a little but not enough to call it quits.

This past month with June has been incredible. After that first night, we’ve tried to spend any free time June has together. Most days, I meet her for lunch unless one of us is too busy—like today. Not that we actually eat. Lunch hour is normally a challenge to see how many times I can make her cum before we have to go back to work.

Along with lunch, I get to see her either Friday or Saturday night. Always at my place—never hers. I understand why, though. Sometimes she spends the night. Other times she has to leave by eleven or earlier. It depends on what’s going on with Jake.

Our arrangement is starting to weigh on me. I live for the nights when she can stay. Waking up next to my little pixie is the highlight of my day. Her leaving is the low point. I’ve spent hours trying to understand why but all I can come up with is that I miss her when she’s gone.

“I missed you too,” June whispers shyly.

“Good—you should,” I tease. “So, how’s Jake?”

“He’s great. Getting bigger every day. I swear he’s taller than he was a month ago. And the way that boy eats! I feel like all my money goes to groceries and clothes.” She laughs.

I ask about Jake every time we talk. He sounds like a great kid. Her voice fills with so much pride when she speaks about him that I hope I get the chance to meet him someday.

Woah, where did that come from?

I have no business thinking about meeting June’s son. Not with the friends with benefits relationship we have. So, I shove that errant thought deep into the recesses of my mind along with the other ones.

“That’s what my mom used to say about me when I was that age,” I chuckle. June gives an amused hum and goes back to her dinner.

I stare at my own half-eaten plate, my appetite gone. My thoughts are consumed with the same question they always are when June comes over. Sick of not
