MAGGIE

Ifound myself curled up with Keir in the wee hours of the morning. He spooned me, big arms wrapped around my body. Our feet entangled in a way that filled my heart with some hope for a future. I loved the way his warm body felt against mine. We’d just shagged one more time, but he had to go. The time came to prep for engagements. This evening, he would fly me home. And somehow I would have to grapple with what the future would be. There would be no goodbye kiss. We’d just say a quick “cheers” and be off on our separate paths.

“Margaux,” he murmured.

“Yes?”

“It’s not over, alright? I’m not running away. I’m going, but I promise I will be back.”

“And what if something happens to you?”

“I’ll do everything I can to ensure it doesn’t, Magpie. And you’ll do the same back home.”

“Okay.”

It wasn’t okay, though. My stomach twisted in knots. I wanted him to hold me forever like this. I wanted this to be every morning. I suddenly understood why Sabine felt her heart was in pieces. Losing Malcolm devastated her in a way I couldn’t understand. Well, until I knew what it could feel like to trust someone and to have someone appreciate every inch of you.

“I don’t want you to go, Keir.”

“I don’t want to, hen. I don’t. And… I don’t want you to feel bad about this. I know it’s sad—for both of us—but it’s not goodbye. It’s until next time.”

“And you’re going to come home to me?”

“I will, yes. I promise you I’m not cutting and running after this. If I never had you in my arms again, I’d feel off.”

“Really?” I turned to face him.

“Yes, Margaux. I care too much about you. I want to see where this goes. The time is shite, but I don’t want you worrying about that. I will send you e-mails. Ring when I can. The trouble is there is never enough time. I tend to hand some off to the officers who have a wife and kids at home. And my mum will expect a call to make sure I’m not dead. She doesn’t use the computer at all. Frightens her.”

“I don’t know how to use email, either” I admitted. “Not really. I have an assistant, but I’ll learn.”

Keir smiled. He kissed my forehead lovingly. I melted again.

“We’ll stay in touch. That’s the point. I’m not leaving for good, Magpie. Alright?”

I nodded. I couldn’t even begin to express how much faith I was putting in him. I couldn’t tell him how much all this meant to me, how little experience I had navigating these waters, and that I had never given this much to someone else. I had never been this vulnerable. It would hurt so much if he never came back to me. Still, I trusted him somehow. He trusted me, too.

“I will do my best to occupy my time and set some aside for after Christmas.”

“That will be good. We can count the days.
