Foley stepped away from the planning room where his team was poring over electrical engineering schematics along the East Coast.

He removed the vibrating cellphone from his BDU pocket, noticing it was a number he’d not seen in some time.

And what Neil Patterson relayed to him during the next thirty seconds made the steely commander’s heart race.

An hour into the drive from the tiger reserve, Shepard stopped the vehicle at a pull-off beside a river.

He rummaged through the Russians’ belongings in the back seat, finding a backpack with an UZI and a half-dozen spare magazines, a medical kit, binoculars, condensed food packets and some water bottles.

Shepard did a chamber check on the UZI, placing it on the armrest, then slid the nearly depleted AK behind his seat. He handed Zemenova a water bottle, which she wasted little time in gulping down.

“You wanna tell me what you pulled off the dead guy in that cabin back there?”

She averted her eyes, opening the door then stepping out. “Nothing that concerns you.”

“But clearly something that was worth risking getting shot for and probably the sole reason you made the trip out here.”

He got out, moving around to the other side near a cluster of stumps centered around a campfire ring cluttered with trash.

“And don’t tell me that guy was providing you with travel documents. He looked like a farmer, not someone who spent much time behind a keyboard. By the way you’ve handled yourself since we hit the trail yesterday, I’d say you’ve been to that park before.”

“I never said I was getting travel documents. I said that I couldn’t leave India until I got what I came for, and my friend Nihar back at the cabin was going to help me.”

Zemenova’s stomach still felt queasy from the constant adrenaline and stress coupled with a lack of food during the past twenty-four hours. She knew her only way out of this region and perhaps even the country was with the American. She still wasn’t sure of the scope of his operation, but he would have access to resources or personnel for slipping across borders. Plus, she was sincere in her offer to help him with Burke’s final request for Perseus.

But where is the rest of Stephen’s research? Someone high up in the U.S. government must have it if they need me to reconfigure the source code. Her head was swirling with the strange turn of events since their arrival at the tiger preserve along with the heart-wrenching loss of her friend. Right now, she needed to continue fostering the American’s trust and escape the reach of the Russian mob.

Zemenova sighed, feeling like she was back on the jungle trail, where one misstep could mean a deadly encounter with a predator.

She leaned back against the vehicle, removing the small nylon pouch from her cargo pants pocket. “When I relocated to India, Stephen placed me with a volunteer group in the preserve with a man he knew who had helped refugees and people fleeing from other countries for one reason or another.
