When Julian woke at 6 a.m. the next day, he found the bed beside him empty and a note on his wife’s pillow.

Couldn’t sleep. Gone for an early walk.

After cleaning his teeth and washing his armpits, Julian sauntered down to Gabriel’s room. Inside, the air was thick and warm and laced with sweat. Julian slipped beneath the sheet and pulled Gabriel’s wings towards him.

‘Hey, big guy,’ Gabriel murmured.

‘We need to talk.’ Julian nuzzled Gabriel’s shoulder.

‘Sounds ominous.’

Julian explained the deal he’d struck with Olivia.

‘She wants me out of here after your birthday?’ Gabriel said.

‘That’s what she told me.’ Julian’s pulse thudded in his ears. ‘She has been very accommodating.’

‘But this is fun, right?’ Gabriel pulled away and sat up. ‘Aren’t we having fun?’

‘That’s not the point.’

‘It’s okay for you. With your fancy new life, your money.’

‘What about the money I gave you? What about your fresh start?’

‘You think a guy can start over with a few lousy grand?’

‘Surely you could have found something more productive to do than growing drugs in the Himalayas?’

‘Hey, I was good at that shit.’

‘Where’s all the money you made?’

‘What, like I was gonna carry it home in a suitcase? Come on. Six months in Goa used up most of it. By the time I’d bought fake visa stamps for my passport and a fake driving licence, it was gone.’

‘I thought you wanted to change your life?’

Gabriel reached behind him for a pillow. ‘I had to hide away after what I did for you.’ He pummelled the pillow into shape and slid it behind his head. ‘Let’s not forget that, my friend.’

Body trembling, Julian sat on the edge of the bed. The secret they shared hung between them in the room’s sweaty fug. Unable to find the words to banish it, he got up and walked away.
