Blended Cultures, Blended Religions

Many Latin Americans practice religions that are forms of syncretism. This means that they blend two or more different belief systems into a new form. For example, Santería is a popular religion in Cuba. “Santería” means “The Way of the Saints,” and it is a fusion of West African Yoruba religious traditions with Roman Catholic creed. It is a way that many Africans preserved their religious heritage upon being brought against their will to Latin America to work as slaves.
