They decided that surprise would be their chief weapon and, placing a scout on top of a tree, they made ready. About half an hour later the scout shouted down.
"Usuman! I see a cloud of dust. "
Usuman sprang to his feet and asked: "Are there many people?"
"Hundreds !"
"What shall we do?" asked the others.
"Do?" said Usuman scornfully. "He who is afraid may leave now before it is too late."
Those three men had too often seen what happened to others who obeyed this invitation to be tempted to throw away their lives so easily. For it went without saying that if any one of them had dared to leave, Usuman would have shot him in the back.
