Aiden

Hide You - Kosheen

Suzy disappears through the crowd, clearly spooked. I stare with confusion, wondering what has upset her, when not thirty seconds ago she was assuring me all was well.

I’m so distracted, I don’t realize Dara is striding towards me.

“Aiden…” I jump, but as he reaches me, a commotion draws our attention to the back of the ballroom, which is followed immediately by a gunshot.

All hell breaks loose, everyone ducks down. There is screaming and shouting, confusion reigns. Dara and I hit the floor, holding onto each other, and immediately Mick rushes to our side. Once I am sure no one is shooting near me, I raise my head to work out where the noise has come from, and if I can find Suzy.

Scanning the room quickly, I find I can’t see Dad, but Mum is crouched down by the front of the ballroom, surrounded by security. Dara, who, seeing I’m about to run, shouts at me as I sprint towards the back entrance.

“Don’t go after her, Aiden. She isn’t worth it!”

What the hell?

I ignore him, staying as low as I can, as another spray of gunshots reverberates from the room Suzy disappeared into. Dara’s men are rushing into the area, but none of them are as quick as me, and I reach the swing doors before them. Crouching, I push the doors open, seeing dark suits and semi-automatic guns. They are backing out quickly through the door opposite me, leaving everyone dead or dying.

There is no way I can get in from here. There are too many of them and I am not armed. I wait a moment, security surrounding me, poised to enter, fingers on ears. The ballroom is now almost clear apart from Dara’s men and some of Dad’s family. Peering through the small windows in the doors, I quickly scan the space before ducking down, hiding myself.

I crack the door open slightly as a hiss comes from one of the black suits beside me, telling me to wait. There is no sign of the attackers, who appear to have fled out of the back exit of the building, the room now empty.

Ignoring the security guy at my side, I push the doors gently, opening it enough to realize they have thrown a smoke bomb as they made their escape, obscuring everything inside. I can’t wait. I need to know if Suzy is in here, or if she has been harmed or, worse, killed. My blood is raging, filling my ears and the pain that shoots through me at that thought galvanizes me into action and I stride into the space calling her name.

Quickly I cough, my throat dry from the poison in the air, but I must push on. Holding the sleeve of my jacket against my mouth and nose, I make my way around bodies, some writhing and moaning in pain, but most are silent and still.

As I turn to the set of doors, a dark, familiar figure moves towards it, obscured by the thick atmosphere.
