Chapter 9

July 8th

A cigarette holder dangled from the lady’s hand, burning red-hot when she inhaled, though the burnt tobacco brought little pleasure. The red tip mirrored her feelings, though the only giveaway was her clenched teeth. Despite the composed look she strived to keep at all times, the man across from her didn’t meet her gaze. Both of his hands worked a dingy green hat, twisting it back and forth as he stood.

“You failed.” It wasn’t a question, and he didn’t respond. The lady took her eyes off him, looking out of a window as clouds darted across a half-moon. She paid this man more than enough to complete simple tasks. “Unusual for you. How did it happen?”

More hat-wringing. “He is well-trained in self-defense.”

The cigarette brightened, and she blew smoke toward him. “Mr. Jankowski, you must do better than that.”

Finally, he met her eyes. “What can I say, ma’am? He caught me solid in the face, knocked me right out. Can’t do much when I’m down for the count.”

A valid point, and right now she didn’t have time to argue. “You should count yourself lucky the police didn’t arrest you. Or that Mr. Chase left you with only a headache.” Jankowski grumbled, but didn’t argue. “Regardless, we must press on. They are moving closer to what I suspect is a wonderful find.”

“Any idea what it is, ma’am?”

She stubbed out her cigarette and stood, heels clicking on the floor. “No,” she admitted. “However, that does not mean I should not have it. Whatever it may be.” She twirled, and the man visibly flinched. “Think about it. What would make you risk your life? This man James – he was running to stay alive. Anything that would make a man do that must be valuable.”

“Then you should have it, ma’am.”

“Correct.” She brushed past him and walked to a desk. A single folder sat on top. “Take this. It is information from my friend at the university. This should tell you how to find them, if not where.”

Jankowski looked through the documentation. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Anything further I learn will be sent to your phone,” she said. “I hope you learned something from this mishap. It surprises me a banker could get the better of you.” Jankowski glared. Good. You should be angry. “Be more careful this time. Wait until the time is right, preferably without witnesses. Use whatever force is necessary to find the next message from James.” A cat jumped onto the desk, and she ran her hand along its back. “Better yet,” she said as the cat purred. “Let them find it for you. Dr. White is intelligent. Do not intervene too early. We still do not know everything she does, and it would not be wise on your part to make me lose my prize.”

“Of course, ma’am.”

“Keep me updated on your progress.” She pointed her chin at the door, and Jankowski left. Long after the door clicked shut, she remained standing by the desk, rubbing the cat’s ears as she stared outside.
