E lica carefully packed the best dress she owned into her handbag. Then she told her parents she was going to Bernie’s apartment to study. Her mother nodded. “Will you be home for dinner?”

“No, I’ll eat at Bernie’s house. We have a school project to finish.”

“All right.” Her mother was always tired these days, as was her father. They were getting older, and hard work was taking its toll on them. When Elica looked at her mother, who was slender to the point of being skinny, bent with a slight hump in her upper back and deep lines around her eyes, she found it easier to justify dating Anna’s boyfriend. After all, her mother worked for Anna’s family. She’d given the Levinstein’s the best years of her life. Instead of paying attention to Elica, her mother was busy caring for Anna’s needs. So, why shouldn’t I take what is being offered to me? I’m sure Anna thought nothing of taking my mother’s time and youth. I know she got paid, and she needed the job. But why should Anna have all the good things? It’s not fair. Now it’s my turn. Daniel likes me, not her, and I refuse to feel guilty about it.
