Sadie stuffed a binder full of team-building exercises into her backpack, added a deck of cards, four blindfolds, pens, a stack of paper, matches, and Red Vines because the secret candy cupboard in the teacher’s lounge was out of Twizzlers.

Holding the zipper’s pull, she considered dragging it closed slowly, one tooth at a time, the way she always did when Amy was sleeping. But it was five a.m. and Sadie needed Amy awake. So she let the zip rip.

Despite the sudden noise, Amy remained asleep, the orange light from her heat lamp warming her like a rotisserie chicken.

Sadie flicked on the light. “Wakey, wakey, little snakey!”

Amy pulled the blankets over her head.

Sadie yanked them down.

Amy covered her face in pillows.

Sadie shut off the heat lamp.

Amy shot up. Her topknot flopped forward.

“Nice unicorn-horn,” Sadie said.

“What are you doing?” Amy collapsed onto her stack of pillows. “What time is it?”

“Cheer Camp time!”

“Huh?”

“Come on!” Sadie urged, pulling Amy back up. “I was awake all night planning.”

“Planning what?”

“Fun ways to bond.”

“Bond? We’re literally a Pack.”

“In life, yes, but not in cheer,” Sadie insisted. “We have to work better as a team and I figured out how.” She gave Amy a stack of warm clothes. “Come on!”

Yes, Amy was half asleep and fully irritated but she would perk up after she played Sadie’s team-building games. They all would. And if not…

Sadie slung the backpack over her shoulder and shook the thought from her head. If not was so not an option.
