No toy. My lips tremble and my eyes get really wet feeling.
âEmma, whatâs wrong?â Mommy asks.
âShe didnât bring me a toy!â I say. Only I didnât really say it, I cried it.
Mommyâs mouth pops open like a circle.
Ava tries to give me a hug. âWhat wrong, Emmy?â
âShe was supposed to bring me a yellow duck.â I feel Avaâs tiny arms trying to wrap around my waist as big, super fat tears roll down my cheeks. âShe took all my pacifiers and only left me a note. I wanted a stuffed duck.â
Daddy comes out of his room. âWhatâ¦â
âBut, Emma, you didnât give away all of your pacifiers,â Mommy says, pulling me into one of her hugs. âYou kept two of them, remember?â
I nod. âI know.â I try to stop crying but I canât. Iâm so sad.
âThe pacifier fairy only brings you a toy when you give away all of your pacifiers.â
Daddy coughs. I look at him then up at Mommy. âAll of them.â Itâs the worst thing I can imagine. I know five-year-olds donât use pacifiers, but I want to. I love my pacifiers.
Mommy nods. She looks as sad as I feel. âAll of them.â
âO-kay.â But it isnât ok. Iâm so sad and scared. No pacifiers is scary. âIâm not even five yet.â
I hold on to Mommy really tight. Mommy picks me up like she does with Ava. I may be almost five and a big girl, but I still need my mommy to hold me sometimes.
Mommy rubs my back and kisses my head. âI know. You still have a few days to decide what you want to do.â
âDo I have to decide right now?â I hiccup cause crying makes me do that.
âNope. Right now you have to eat breakfast and get ready to go school. You can think about what you want to do and decide tonight.â
âWhat if Iâm not ready?â
Mommy kisses my head again as she sets my toes touch the floor. âThen maybe youâll be ready tomorrow.â Mommy puts both her hands on my cheeks. âI believe in you, sweetie. I know youâll know when youâre ready.â
But I donât know if I will ever be ready.
