Carvalho perceives biblical depictions of divine violence as part of an aesthetic that “is used to communicate the ultimately indescribable nature of the divine.” Carvalho admits to being attracted to the image of a violent god; she writes:

I am attracted to this kind of god, not because I want to be the victim of divine violence, and not because I am secure in my own righteousness, but because at the end of the day I want a God who cares enough to be angry, involved enough to do something, and divine enough to accomplish what humans shouldn’t even try.15
