Milo met Rosie’s smile with a stern face. ‘Have you come to tell me to buy a jacket and a top hat?’ he asked sarcastically, as Rosie arrived at his stall.

Rosie flushed. ‘I didn’t mean to insult you, Milo, and I’m sorry for what I said.’

‘It’s me who’s sorry, Rosie. Sorry that the way I dress offends you.’

‘Please, Milo, don’t be angry with me. It was cruel and thoughtless of me, and I can’t bear for us not be friends.’

Rosie’s abject expression tugged at Milo’s heart. He could tell that she was genuinely sorry and so he stepped out from behind the stall and gave her a brief hug. ‘Let’s forget about it,’ he said.

Forgiven, Rosie’s spirits perked and she smiled winsomely up into his face.

‘I’ve a favour to ask,’ she said sweetly.

Milo immediately looked wary. What now?

‘I want you to meet Mr Threppleton,’ Rosie continued. ‘He asked after you and I said I would bring you to meet him. We’re to go to the Strafford Arms at six o’clock this evening.’

Milo frowned. ‘Why?’ To Rosie’s disappointment he was cross again.

‘Because Mr Threppleton has been very good to me, and I told him that you were the dearest person in the world to me,’ she gabbled, desperate for Milo to understand how important it was for him to meet Hildred. ‘I told him you were like a brother, and I want him to know what a wonderful person you are.’ Rosie’s shoulders sagged as she ran out of steam. She began to beseech him again, but Milo was one step ahead.

‘Like a brother, a wonderful person, and not some common gypsy who’ll lead you astray? Is that it? Is he about to check me out to make sure I’m good enough to associate with you?’

Rosie blanched. ‘No,’ she cried, neither convincing herself nor Milo.

Milo turned away from her to serve a customer. ‘I’ll think about it,’ he growled. ‘Now let me get on with my work.’

Rosie walked away, thoroughly disheartened.
