I have this plan for what I’d do if I could control the weather. I’d grow the tree in the back so high it’d be ten times the size of the building. Then, the sky would open up, and it’d snow. A thick, wet snow. Take a day of that, maybe two. The oak’s boughs would finally bend under the weight, like those old-time petticoats. I can see it so clear in my mind how beautiful it could be.

As the last remark is offered, the film cuts to a close-up of Brian’s face, and in that moment, the film leaves the fantasy of the articulate, imaginative Brian Sussman. The background music abruptly ends, and in the silence, we see the disabled Brian who cannot speak or move and who remains unresponsive as two aides move him from the wheelchair in which he was sitting to his bed. During the voice-over, the film shows us the snow and the oversized trees summoned by Brian’s imagined powers, but with the cut to the film’s mundane reality, those disappear alongside Brian’s words.

The fantasia appears a second time after Bill struggles indecisively with his conscience over the work he must perform. He stands in the doorway to Brian’s room:
