Standing in a long line of Chaos Guards, Lan held her breath, hoping none of them looked too closely in her direction. Walking and living amongst them was easy enough, but even after weeks of living alongside them, she still wasn’t comfortable being too close to any of the men for any length of time. Every inch of her skin crawled and prickled with nervous bumps, and even as Jalen cooed into her ear to remain calm, she rarely could.

Avery was the only near-friend she’d been able to make, and Lan almost felt bad lying to him every day. The only saving grace from all of it was that the more nervous she was, the more her body ticked. The more her body ticked, the easier time she had feigning Chaos.

Since arriving at the Chaos Castle, Lan had spent most of her time trying to weasel her way into throne room duty—without any luck. Most of the other Chaos Guards were older, and they understandably preferred the more senior guards watching over the Chaos Queen. But something crisped the air that morning, and Lan felt something different vibrate over her skin. A tickle in the breeze through the obsidian castle sent her senses alight and made her stand a little straighter. Even though she couldn’t put her finger on the suspiciously hopeful sensation.

Kaaz walked down the hall, surveying each Chaos Guard as he passed. Stopping in front of Lan, she had to force her eyes forward so they would not flick momentarily to Jalen’s feathered body in the corner where the wall met the ceiling. Any little thing and Kaaz might overlook her. For the past two weeks since her assignment, that was exactly what he had done, and Lan was done waiting. Having only caught glimpses and peeks of the Chaos Queen since her arrival, Lan was eager to serve in the throne room, eager to see her again—maybe even talk to her.

Or at least to figure out how their plan could continue forward, how they could progress. She’d spoken to Jalen about the plan, but he cared more about getting rid of the Queen and expelling the Chaos from the Primary Crystal. The problem was, neither of them knew exactly how to do it. And since the Chaos Queen never left the throne room, rooted to the throne in stone, when would they ever get the chance?

“Lan.” Kaaz’s booming voice echoed down the arched corridor. “Have you served your Queen yet?”

Lan stared straight ahead, not even making eye contact with Kaaz as she answered. “I serve the Chaos Queen every day,” she started and took a deep breath. She’d been waiting to be chosen for throne room duty. Was this it? “But I have not yet served within the throne room.”

Using her peripheral vision, Lan peeked at Kaaz’s facial expression, but his face was always so stony that it was hard for her to decipher much of anything.

“We’re blending the teams today,” Kaaz went on. “Half of you
