The shower was hot and good. I stood directly under the main jet and let the water crash into my face and run down my neck. Cracking my neck to release some tension, I grabbed the soap and got to work washing myself down. I knew Laura’s Romanian friends needed a little time to regroup and get angry and talk about revenge, and I had to use that time wisely. Cleaning up and getting some sleep was essential. I’d only had a couple of hours’ sleep at Matt’s place and that was on a sofa.

I turned the shower off and grabbed a towel. Then, using the cheap set of disposable razors we’d bought I shaved and brushed my teeth and got dressed, leaving my shoes off. Returning to the main bedroom, I saw Laura on the bed, sleeping. I considered lying down beside her but scratched the idea. It was forward and presumptuous; we had met only a few hours ago and barely knew each other.

I walked over to the bed, picked up one of the spare pillows and then returned to the chair in the corner next to the TV set. I crushed the pillow down into the back of the chair, the same way I do on commercial aircraft and then made myself as comfortable as I could. I only needed an hour to recharge and I had slept in much worse places. Much worse. I closed my eyes and tried to rub out what had happened to me in the previous hours and then I was gone.

When I woke after lunch, thin, watery light was spilling onto the carpet in front of the radiator under the cheap curtains. Laura was still fast asleep on the bed. She had pulled the covers up over her and looked peaceful. Only a few short hours since me and the team went through the skylights back in Connaught Square and I still had no idea what was going on. I wanted to change that. I rummaged around in my pocket and found the slip of paper John Grant had given me back in the park.

It was time to talk to Brookline and get some answers but fate had one more surprise. When I pulled out my phone I saw I already had a message waiting.
