How about You?

Do you know people who are sick or elderly? They are important to Jesus even if they can’t do all the things you can do. God is pleased when you show special kindness to them.

Memorize:

“We must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35, NIV

Love Those Who Are Suffering

Ready for Rain

Read Psalm 86:1-7

“I’ve got to call the repairman,” Tori’s father announced at breakfast. “I want him to check out a leak in the roof over the kitchen.”

Tori was surprised. It was a very sunny day, and it had not rained for several days. She looked up at the ceiling. It was as dry as could be, though there was a mark where the water had come in. “Why does the repairman need to come?” she asked. “It’s not leaking now. Maybe it’s okay.”

Dad shook his head. “It can hardly be okay when we haven’t done anything to correct it,” he told her. “Maybe it doesn’t show right now, but as soon as it rains or snows, the moisture will come in again.”

Later that day Tori became angry with her sister, lost her temper, and said things that she was sorry for later. “Oh,” she moaned, “things were going so well—I hadn’t gotten mad for so long, I forgot that I have to watch out for my temper.”

Dad nodded. “It’s like the roof,” he said. “We forget all about the leak when it’s not raining, but that doesn’t change the problem. The leak is still there. And your temper is still there, too—even when there are no problems.”

Tori sighed. “I guess so,” she agreed.

“I need to get that leak fixed now, even though it’s not giving us a problem today. Otherwise we’ll have trouble when bad weather comes,” said Dad. “And you need to commit your temper to the Lord each day—even when you’re not feeling angry about anything. Ask him to take charge of it and change it. Then when you get mad, he can help you express your anger appropriately. And you and I can talk about ways to do that too.”

Slowly Tori nodded. “Be ready when the ‘rain’ comes, right?” she asked.

Smiling, Dad nodded. “You’ve got the idea,” he said. RIJ
