Later, in bed, with my phone resting on my stomach, my sister’s voice fills the air, which feels more electrifying since the argument with Caladin. Everything about me is more charged since earlier. The three hours passing since he ran off have changed nothing.

“Um, yeah, that sounds exactly like he was jealous. But do you not remember what I said? You’re stuck in this marriage, Yas, so stop acting like it’ll randomly end one day. It’s not temporary, so embrace it. Clearly, there’s something between you two.”

“It’s called dislike.”

“Or sexual tension.”

“No,” I immediately deny. There’s nothing between us. Not that.

“Then please, describe that kiss again.”

I groan. “Why’d I tell you in the first place?”

“Oh, because it’s your best, and I quote, kiss you’ve ever had. What’d you say? Altered your brain chemistry.” She snaps her fingers. “Yeah, that.”

“Fuck off before I throw my phone across the room to shut you up. It was so much easier to argue with you when we were together. But don’t you agree with me at all, Roz? Like, he lost his shit on the single guy who spoke to me. That’s not the actions of a man who’ll let me do whatever.”

“Maybe it’s a sign you shouldn’t be doing whatever. Also, don’t forget his role. He’s right. Stay away from his men because it’ll end badly for everyone involved. Besides, you’re so worried about something you haven’t even acted on yet. Any interest in anyone else?”

Answering her carefully because I don’t know where she’s going with this, I say, “No.”

“Have you looked?”

Shit. I close my eyes, hating my own admittance. “No.”

“No, huh? That could have easily been a ‘not yet.’ Admit it, you want to be physical with him.”

Deny. Maybe if my sister didn’t know me so well.

“We both made the agreement for distance so we can be with who we want to.”

“Yes, and why is that? You’re obviously both running from something. You don’t want to actually fall in love with your husband, so you think distance is the answer. All the other men you know have been asshole disappointments who’ve controlled your life, so you’re lumping him into the same category.”

“He is in the same category,” I counter, throat burning because it’s not the complete truth and I know it. “He married me, taking away that choice.”

Rozelyn continues like I haven’t spoken. “But I wonder why he doesn’t want the marriage. Bad experiences with love? A player and he doesn’t want to be stuck to a single woman? I wonder…”

“From what I know, he hasn’t slept with anyone since finding me, so I doubt it’s the second one.” But my sister’s curiosity does have me wondering why Caladin granted my first wish in the way he had.

Then why be jealous today? The two paths don’t intersect.

I groan, rubbing my hands against my forehead. “I don’t know, nothing makes sense. At this point, all I can think about is this weekend.”

“What’s happening this weekend?”

“A party. Guess the Famiglia wants to get to know me formally, thus the event.
