Thirty-one

I’m admiring the gardener’s winter-hardy flower beds from the front porch as Zack’s car stops at the gate. When my shoulders tense at the sight of his Explorer, I’m surprised to realize I am physically bracing for an encounter with my son.

As the gate opens, I lower my gaze as if I’ve spied something interesting in the lawn. The house has been peaceful all day, a good place to work and relax. As soon as Zack steps inside, though, the tension level inside these walls will rise several percentage points.

How can a mother swing from enjoying her son to dreading him?

From the corner of my eye, I see Zack get out of the car and slam the door. He is carrying something, but not until he reaches the side walk do I look up and see what fills his arms—pink roses. Two dozen, from the look of the tissue-papered bundle.

“Hey, Mom.” Smiling, he comes forward and places the roses in my lap. “I saw these and thought of you.”

In astonished silence, I blink at the gift.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” Zack adds hastily. “I’m not trying to suck up.”

I look at my son, whose eyes gleam with uncertainty.

“They’re beautiful,” I say, my heart breaking. “Thank you so much.”
