But after a few blasts of hot air, the makeup all fuses together, making him a clown instead of a menace.3
âI was a star in my own country and I will not be a scarecrow here!â Lugosi didnât want to be typecast, but thatâs exactly what happened. When he needed money badly, he had to eat crow and even play the Monster in 1943âs Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, a role he unwisely turned down a decade before. It didnât do him any good. He died a wreck of his former self, drug-addicted (he took morphine for medical reasons), an alcoholic, finding work only in the cheapest of pictures, with the posthumously released Plan 9 from Outer Space becoming his memorial. Lugosi died on August 16, 1956, at age 73, but he looked older. As a âhorrorâ star he never came near an Academy Award like Fredric March did when he starred in Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde in 1931, but when Martin Landau portrayed Lugosi the Wreck in Tim Burtonâs Ed Wood (1994), he would be given an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
