Richard Porton: According to what I’ve read, Crimson Gold is partially based on an actual incident. Could you comment on the differences and similarities between that incident and the film’s narrative?

Jafar Panahi: The only true aspect of the story in the film involves the opening scene with the burglar going into the store. It’s fiction playing with truth, although I try to capture the social reality of Tehran.

RP: I assume you added certain details such as making Hussein, the burglar, a pizza deliveryman. It doesn’t seem likely that this character would find himself in upper-class neighborhoods if he didn’t have this sort of job.

JP: I wasn’t even sure of the actual robber’s profession. That was only a narrative excuse to allow the character to travel within different levels of Iranian society. We always try to find an excuse in our movies to discover what’s going on in various strata of society. Hussein, the main character, is just a string pulling us from the southern part of the city to northern neighborhoods. He’s the catalyst.
