If James was the successor of Jesus, James was spiritually realized. He was fully liberated and knew himself as being pure, unbroken awareness. His sense of identity was merged not in the body and mind, but in God—not in the sense of the creator, but in the sense of the essence and spirit of all things.

And Jesus says the cosmos exists for such a person as him, which is to say that the cosmos exists for spiritual realization. If one believes in a creator God, one can look at it this way: God creates the cosmos out of himself so that it will evolve into countless, seemingly individual points of consciousness. Though science changes its mind about things continually, at this point many scientists ascribe to the theory of the big bang, which implies that at one point the entire cosmos was a single, compressed ball of energy which then exploded into manifestation. While this may not be true, it does serve as a good illustration of God's process in this regard: he compresses his energy into a single point, whereafter he explodes. And in this explosion the laws of the universe form, serving as the basis for all future manifestations.
