The fonts are the voice you give your text, and the styles you apply add the inflection and tone to that voice. Although Web design seems to have a limited number of text styles (color, bold, italic, text case, decoration, and text shadow) combining all of these components can create a surprising number of effects.

Styles are where designers do a lot of work, and tie closely into the work you will do to create a strong hierarchy of information throughout the entire design at the macro level, which we will discuss more in chapter 8. In this chapter, we are just concerning ourselves with how to apply the basic styles to the text (the micro level).

Before you start adding styles to your text, though, it is important to make sure that you create a consistent baseline to start from. All browsers have default styles that they apply to text in the absence of any styles you define. Begin any new project by first resetting the basic styles, and then developing a style guide that you or your staff or clients can refer to while working.
