The Blue Star is the nicest restaurant I’ve ever been to. I feel like a movie star when the valet opens the car door for me and I step out onto the sidewalk. Brent hands the young man wearing a shirt and bow tie the keys, then offers me his arm before he whisks me inside. The lighting is soft in the restaurant, and the other diners waiting for tables in the lobby are all dressed elegantly. The maître d’ seats us immediately. We’re a few minutes late, so I’m really nervous and expecting the other couple to already be here, but our table is unoccupied.

Brent pulls out my chair for me and, like a true gallant, waits for me to sit before he does. The maître d’ hands us big, oblong menus printed on very expensive cardstock, while a wine server appears immediately and offers us the house blend. The man pours Brent a little. My husband examines the wine, checking its legs, then smells it before taking a sip. I didn’t even know Brent knew how to taste wine, but he looks like an old pro. Where did he learn how to do this?

“It’s good,” he says neutrally, like he’s being parsimonious in his praise. “Please leave the bottle.”

The server pours us two full glasses, then deposits the wine bottle in a bucket of ice next to our table. I sip the wine carefully because I don’t want to spill any on my new dress, and I don’t want to have too much before the other couple arrives. I don’t want them thinking … I don’t know. I want them to think Brent and I are the perfect couple, completely well-adjusted, responsible individuals, worthy of investing in.

Brent leans over. “You really do look hot, babe. I might have to take you into the bathroom for a quickie.”

I blush and focus on the menu. All the entrées sound delicious. And they’re all ridiculously expensive. I’m trying really hard not to think about how much everything costs—but it’s especially difficult when I’ve got this new ring on my finger. Not to mention my dress or that dashing suit Brent is wearing. By the way, he looks amazing. Those broad shoulders and that tapered waist of his are almost tempting enough to take him up on his offer. I mean, not really. I’d never be caught dead making love in the bathroom of a restaurant. But the minute we get home, now that’s a different story.

“What do you think?” He looks around. “Pretty nice.”

“Um, yeah.” It’s by far the nicest restaurant I’ve ever been in. “I wasn’t sure places like this existed in real life.”

He laughs, and his hand finds my thigh under the table.

“Love you, babe,” he says.

“Love you too.”

All this is a lot to take in. Before Brent went away, we were arguing a lot, and he was in danger of losing his job. I didn’t know what the future held for us as a couple, to be honest. A separation almost seemed inevitable.
