Twenty-One

Nicole snapped the folder closed, her hands quivering under the enormity of her discovery. She felt completely overwhelmed and like her head might explode at any second. She didn’t know what to think, she knew even less what to do. From Rebecca’s menacing threats to the sorrow and guilt surrounding her mother’s death, compounded now by the very real possibility her boss was committing fraud - it felt like too much to shoulder.

Rising from her desk, she paced her office, a knot of anxiety and confusion crunching her stomach muscles. It felt as if she was on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

Come on, Nic. Pull yourself together.

You’re stronger than this.

Once more, it was her father’s voice she heard. It helped. Despite being on the brink of tears, she sniffed back her emotions, reminding herself of her own resilience, refusing to succumb to despair.

She was stronger than this.

But she needed support, a touchstone in the storm. Grabbing her phone, she tapped out a brief WhatsApp message to Jade asking her if she could meet up with her after work. Jade’s response was almost instantaneous.

Tension knotted her shoulders as she walked, her eyes darting anxiously, treating every shadow and passer-by as a potential menace. Her mind was a whirlwind of paranoia and grief, eroding her once steadfast determination. For a fleeting moment, she considered the possibility that Rafe was behind her being followed. But the pieces didn’t fit. The timelines didn’t align.

Plus, why would he go to all the trouble of having someone tail her, but not hide the incriminating documents better? Instinctively, she felt Rafe was unaware of what she’d found out. Yet, looming over her was one critical, unresolved question: Was Rafe behind these questionable dealings?

The truth was, he had been acting strangely since his birthday weekend. Ollie too. In fact, thinking about it now, hadn’t they both hinted at underlying issues? It was a lot to consider, but there were, of course, other potential suspects within the company. Could Sarina be involved, or perhaps one of the
