Along the stone wall at roughly the center of the area hit by Pickett’s Charge was a small clump of trees. After the war, a Virginia veteran from Pickett’s Division told Gettysburg historian John B. Bachelder the clump, or “copse” of trees, was the focal point of the charge. Thereafter, the copse became symbolic of the pinnacle of the assault, and the “High Water Mark” memorial, which features a bronze book listing all the commands participating in the charge (above), was dedicated there in 1892.
