Chapter 11

Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing:and girded me with gladness; thou hast put off my sackcloth,

Psalm 30:11

Once Stephanie was safely home in her bedroom, Megan crept into her room. “Stephanie, did you go home with Jared?”

Stephanie nodded. “Yeah.”

“Why? Is everything okay?”

“I kind of like him.”

“Jared?”

“Yeah. Is that so unbelievable?”

“Nee. I suppose not. I’ve just always thought of him like a bruder, but I don’t know why I didn’t think of him for you before. I could see by the way he was talking to you tonight at the singing that he likes you.”

“You think so?”

Megan nodded enthusiastically.

“But what about me living with a man before? Has that tainted me?”

“Nee, of course not. Everyone does wrong; you weren’t raised in the community and haven’t been baptized. What do you think people who go on rumspringa do?”

“I suppose so.”

“They get to try everything the world has to offer before they make their choice.”

“I know.”

“If you want to stay on in the community, confess your sins to the bishop and get baptized. Gott covers all your sin, and you are born anew. Now, if you were to do something like that after you were baptized, you’d be shunned.”

“I see how it works. I never really knew before. Everyone seems so happy and contented in the community.” Except Jeremiah, she thought.

“That’s what the young people say when they return from rumspringa. No one out there cares about them like the community does.”

“It’s a big decision.” Stephanie pursed her lips.

Megan leaned forward and touched her on the shoulder. “You don’t have to make it now; you’ve plenty of time.”

As Megan left for her own room, Stephanie knew that Megan was right, as usual.

Peace and calm floated across Stephanie as she slipped between the sheets breathing in the fresh scent of the sun-dried linen. Closing her eyes, Jared came to mind. He was nothing like Jeremiah; he would never behave toward her as Jeremiah had.

She decided if she wanted to do things correctly, she’d have to get the money back to the rightful owners since she was the only one who knew where it was hidden. To do that, she had to be careful not to get into even more trouble.

There was only one thing for it. She’d need to get Megan on board to help her since she couldn’t do it on her own.
