Chapter 24

Leck

I pulled my Tesla to the curb at the coffee shop where Sydney and I agreed to meet. The flutter in my chest was a mix of nerves and excitement at the thought of seeing her. This was better than picking up my date for a high school dance back in the day. Who was I kidding? Nerd that I was, I never had a date for the dance.

She stood on the sidewalk, two cups in hand, waiting for me. I rolled down the window and called her name. I clicked a selection on the car’s integrated touchscreen to open the door for her when she approached.

“Nice car.” She whistled in appreciation as she got in and passed me an iced coffee.

“Thank you for the compliment and the caffeine fix.” I auto-closed the door for her using the touchscreen, then leaned over the center console and kissed her on the cheek. I reminded myself of friends first, then benefits, fighting the urge to turn my head and take her lips.

I opened the real estate app I’d set our appointments with on the car’s touchscreen.

“You don’t have a real estate agent on speed dial?” She watched as I selected the first property and the car’s navigation screen populated with turn-by-turn directions.

Of course I had agents on speed dial. And for anyone but her, I’d have foisted this task off on them. But condo shopping was the ideal way to spend time with Sydney. I selected four cute but not stellar properties to show her today. I couldn’t have her fall in love with the first thing we looked at.

“This is better. I’m one of the investors in this app. Using it, we can visit all the properties without the hassle of an agent. Well, all but this first one over on Brickell Key. It’s not on the app.”

“That’s on the island out there, right?” She pointed over the crystal blue water of the Intracoastal. She was all but vibrating, her excitement at shopping for a new place palpable.

“Yes. Great views of downtown and the cruise ship terminal from there.” I navigated over the short bridge toward the small island that was built up from edge to edge with luxury high-rises, hotels, and office buildings. “What kind of home did you have in Mexico City?”

“A high-rise apartment in the city center. Atlas owned it. I’m not sure I want another fancy building like that, but I’m game to see what you have selected for me.” She nudged me with her elbow.

“I took your budget into consideration. Today we’re shopping at the top of your price point in one of the hottest areas in the city.”

While I managed not to fall victim to Miami’s awful drivers, Sydney took in the scenery of what could be her new neighborhood. Gourmet restaurants, tropical landscaping hemmed in by lots of pavement and busy sidewalks.

The valet at the building we were visiting took my Tesla with the bored face of a guy who had seen and driven many nice cars.
