CHAPTER ELEVEN

The railway exhibition

Jesse checked the phone once more as he was drinking a second strong coffee. Using Google Maps he could see it was a fairly accessible location, just over two miles from the M40: along a chalk ridge and through one small village before skirting the top of the hill and past the windmill he had been to the last time. That had been fairly straightforward really. He had been given the combination and within a minute he had removed the package and closed the small door below the letterbox in the front wall. As he looked across the small room, he could see the package, still unopened as per instructions, waiting for his attention under a pile of clothes on the small foam sofa. This time he had to continue down the hill and then turn right into the small village. There was adequate parking beside the pub, but it was probably best to leave the bike outside the entrance to the village hall, where the exhibition was being held. That way he would be guaranteed a fast exit and should be out of the village in under a minute.

He looked at his watch. The exhibition was due to start at noon. He certainly didn’t want to be early. He only intended to be in the place for a short period of time, just long enough to make the switch. Perhaps arrive just after one p.m. when most visitors have arrived. That meant leaving in half an hour. On the table was the model he had purchased with next day delivery as part of a set that also included track and a controller. He had no use for any of it other than the one piece. He removed the tender and placed it in the small cardboard box he had also ordered, which would hold it safely within the pannier of his motorcycle.

As Dom woke, it dawned on him once again that he would not be spending this Saturday in his usual preferred way. He would not be walking into town to meet his mates at their favourite pub, a small tap room attached to a microbrewery that produced a wide selection of wonderful real ales. His mouth salivated as he thought of the drinks he would be missing. He would also not be walking the half a mile to watch the Wycombe Wanderers home game with an even larger group of mates, followed by a walk back to another pub and a long post-match analysis chat over more drinks, which may lead to eating somewhere nearby with his partner. No, he would not be doing any of this. Instead, he would be going to a railway exhibition, with a man who most of his colleagues shunned, on the pretence of interest, but with the intention of reuniting with an old friend who he had not spoken to for ten years and who he probably now had nothing in common with.

Dom closed his eyes and lay on his back.
