Chapter 20

There is a change in the way Jace and I interact for the next few days. He happily chatted with Serena in the shop that afternoon as I fitted the security cameras. Then we had a pleasant family meal once Rick came home from work. He went back to school the next day, and we didn’t seem to have any issues. I decide to let him attend baseball practice again to reward the change in attitude.

Rick has to visit an important client Friday night, and I’m standing at the kitchen counter, cutting flower stems and bopping along to the radio. Holly is giving Lissa a bath, and Jace is in his room, playing video games. My phone rings, pulling me from my task. At first, I think it’s going to be Rick, letting me know he’s coming home. But then I frown. Why is Elijah calling me?

Swiping to answer, I give him an apprehensive “Hello?”

He’s out of breath and panting, setting me on razor-sharp alarm. “Audrey? Hi. It’s Elijah.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Well…” He pauses. “Emma has just gone into early labor. We’re at the hospital, and she’s getting checked in. This is a long shot, and I understand if you can’t help at such late notice, but is there any possible way you’d be willing or available to watch the kids for us? It would only be the two littlest ones. They’re here at the hospital with us at the moment. It was kind of an emergency, and we had to get going.”

“Absolutely. Of course. Whatever you need.” I place the stems on the counter and dry my hands with a dish towel. “Give me a couple minutes to get everything together, and I’ll pick them up from the hospital.”

“You’re a lifesaver, Audrey. I won’t forget this, trust me.”

“It’s really no problem.”

Holly strides into the kitchen as I’m grabbing my keys from the bowl. “Is everything all right?”

“Well,” I say, gripping the door frame while I wiggle one foot into a shoe, “Emma Johnson from across the street went into early labor. Elijah called me from the hospital and asked me if I wouldn’t mind picking up Abigail and Axel for them.”

I reach for my purse and sling it over my shoulder. “You guys are all good here? Can you let Jace know where I’m going?”

“Yep. No problem.”

The expression on Holly’s face throws me off guard for a moment. She seems concerned, but I can’t tell why. There’s no time to analyze it, however, as I need to get to the hospital. Perhaps I’m projecting my own uncomfortable feelings onto Holly, because I know I have some complicated feelings of my own about the neighbors.
