Chapter 11
ST ANDREWS
THE VICAR COMES TO THE RESCUE
ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE, SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND, KNOCK AND IT SHALL BE OPEN UNTO YOU.
MATTHEW 7:7
âWake up sleepyhead or weâre going to be late for church!â Percy nudged Jeeves who was very happily sleeping in.
âI donât know why but Iâm always late for church,â Percy complained to herself with no small amount of frustration, âand itâs my favorite place to be!â She really didnât want to be late this morning â she was looking forward to seeing St Andrews up close, for until now she had only seen it from a distance.
This lovely old church was built around 1112 AD, replacing an older wooden church that went back to Saxon days, making it more than one hundred years older than Magna Carta. It was the oldest standing building in Wraysbury at the time of King John, apart from the mills, having been built before Ankerwycke Priory. Percy loved old churches, but this was going to be a treasure.
âBreakfast!â Aunt Margaret called out.
Percy finished dressing, and ruffling Jeevesâ coat as she left the room asked, âAre you joining us this morning, Your Majesty?â
Jeeves thought about it, stretched and decided some warm milk sounded good. Plus, he liked church, and was curious how different an English service might be. He wanted to hear what the Vicar had to say.
âMorning, Auntie,â Percy greeted her.
âMy, you are cheerful today. Are you still thinking about yesterday?â
âYesterday was wonderful,â she admitted, âbut actually Iâm excited about today.â
âThatâs nice, dear. Did you get everything done you wanted to?â Aunt Margaret was fishing for clues, suspecting that their sudden trip into London had something to do with their request for costumes.
âNot really, but we did have fun,â Percy replied unhelpfully.
They had just finished a quick bite, when Aunt Margaret noticed the time. â11 am!â she said with a start. âWeâd better shuffle off to buffalo, or weâll be late!â
Percy and Aunt Margaret grabbed their hats and gloves, flew out the back door, and hurried down the garden path to the side entrance of the churchyard, with Jeeves at their heels. Fortunately the back of the Grange was only about three minutes from the church grounds.
St Andrews was a beautiful old stone church with a tall steeple topped by a rooster weathervane. Normally, Percy did not like graveyards but almost every old church in England was surrounded by headstones â hundreds of years old, and somehow, it seemed more natural and friendly here. The thought of having your loved ones so close and still being part of your life actually felt comforting to Percy. She guessed it made it easier to visit more often, bring them flowers, keep them up to date on the latest gossip, or confide oneâs deepest concerns.
They followed the path to the front of the church and entered a beautiful arched wooden door with huge black iron medieval hinges.
