Chapter 6

“Josh!” Noah called in a low warning voice. Bill looked up.

“What are y’all up to, Noah?” he asked.

“We’re just curious, that’s all,” Olivia said in a friendly voice. “We’re going to keep our eyes and ears open for any developments.”

Bill looked a little suspicious but he nodded.

“Well, kids, enjoy that climbing hook. I’m out,” he declared and waved as he headed back up the alley.

“Thanks again!” Noah called. Josh yelled, “Thank you, Bill!”

Noah looked down at Josh. He knew Josh wasn’t trying to get them in trouble but he wasn’t sure Josh was good at this undercover stuff. “Come back up here a minute,” he said to his brother.

Josh made a nervous face and slowly climbed up the ladder.

Noah was glad when Olivia started talking first.

“Josh, if we’re going to work together on this, we have to be careful what we say to people.” She said it nicely. “Putting up a camera on private property is, well, against the law. I could get into trouble”

Josh looked grumpy. “I can keep a secret. Besides, it was my idea to check out the house in the first place.” He looked over at Noah.

“Okay, well, no one has to help if they don’t want to. Are we all in?”

“I’m in,” said Noah.

“Me too,” said Josh.

“Me too,” said Olivia. “Okay, I’ll plant the camera tonight and then I’ll call you to touch base. You do have a home phone right?”

“Yes, of course,” Noah replied and he gave her the number.

“Wait, you’re going to hook up the camera without us?” asked Josh. “I want to go, too.”

Olivia thought for a few seconds and then shook her head. “The more kids, the more chance we’ll be seen. Don’t worry, if I see something good on the feed we can all check it out. I’ll call you,” she told him.

Josh agreed and Olivia packed her bag and got up to go.

“I have a quick babysitting job and then as soon as it’s dark I’ll stop at the house. I’ll call you when it’s done.”

“Okay, talk to you later,” Noah said as Olivia climbed down the ladder and put on her bike helmet.
