CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Library, House of Fourteen Headquarters, Santa Monica, California, United States

“Do you know the best part of not living in the Land of the Chimera?” Elvis asked as they made their way up to the library in the House of Fourteen. It was strange for Rose to be in the large magical building without her father or Liv to lead her. They’d left her with Elvis, who apparently could guide her and talk her ear off.

“You’re going to tell me regardless.” Rose paused at the top of the landing. According to Clark, the floor with the library held nothing else. He had explained with passion in his eyes that this was because the space was larger than all the residential rooms combined. There were thousands and thousands of volumes in the library and a ton of magic.

“Well, for one, my roommates were always up in my business. As much as you take over our room, we still have a lot of space between us.”

Rose fluttered her eyelashes at him in annoyance. “That’s my room, which you’re a squatter in because I allow it. They said they’d make you a room or get you a cat tree or whatever you require. Maybe a dog bed or a kennel?”

The floating dragon grinned. “I won’t entertain your attempts to make me feel like a common house pet.”

She mock-frowned. “I’m devastated.”

“No, you’re not,” he spat. “What I will point out is that you call them ‘they’ or other pronouns.”

Rose slapped her forehead playfully. “Really? I can’t believe it. I’ve been calling other people ‘they’ or by other relevant pronouns. What in the world is wrong with me?”

He narrowed his eyes at her mischievously. “You’re not calling them by title except in your head.”

“You don’t know what I call anyone in my head, or we wouldn’t be talking right now.”

Elvis chuckled. “I can read your mind.”

“No, you can’t.”

“Yes, I can.”

“No…I’m not playing—”

“This game with you,” he interrupted and finished her sentence. “See, I knew what you were going to say.”

“Doesn’t mean you know what’s in my head.” She continued her trek down the hallway toward the doors to the library.

Elvis followed, gliding beside her like he was swimming through the air. “You’re calling Clark ‘him’ or ‘he’ or ‘them’ or ‘they’ because you don’t want to call him by name.”

“Why would I not want to call him by name?” She pretended to focus on the path ahead.

“You don’t want to call him Clark because it will be weird when you feel comfortable enough to call him Dad. You like the title of Aunt Liv, but that also feels too soon, and it’s all new and strange for you.”

Rose halted at the door to the library she’d heard so much about from her father and regarded the Chinese dragon for a moment. “You know, you’re right…”

He nodded proudly.

“We have a lot of space between us,” she continued. “I think we could always have more.”

Elvis’ mustache unfurled, going completely straight. “You don’t mean that. I’m your chimera. We’re bonded.
