Chapter 22

WE WERE GIVING OUR statement to the two cops. One of the officers, Officer Clarke, took down notes on her notepad.

Officer Maddow asked if Big Boss attempted to hurt us or hold a weapon on us. We shook our heads.

“I have to say while this man sounds like quite a bully, if that’s all he did no crime has been committed,” Officer Clarke stated.

“That’s not all he did,” CC cut in firmly. “This man has been harassing my kids for months. This is not an isolated incident.” He filled the officers in on what Big Boss had been doing. “I want to file a police report for harassment.”

“Okay, Mr. Munch,” Officer Maddow replied as Officer Clarke hurriedly scribbled everything down in her notepad. “Why don’t you all come down to the station and we’ll file a formal report. When he attacked your daughter, did you take her to the hospital?”

“No,” CC answered. “The injury wasn’t severe enough. But there was a visible wound on her wrist.”

“When did this occur?” Officer Maddow asked.

“May of this year,” CC replied.

“So six months ago. Did you take any photographs or video of the injuries?” Officer Clarke asked.

CC sighed. “No. I guess I should have.”

“Why didn’t you call the police immediately after this occurred?” Officer Maddow queried. “If he wounded your daughter, that’s assault. Why didn’t you report it?”

“I don’t know,” CC lied. “I didn’t hear about it until after it happened. I talked to the man and warned him to stay away from my children.”

Officer Maddow exhaled loudly. “Mr. Munch, I hate to break this to you, but if you have no physical evidence of this attack, you don’t have much of a case. From what you’ve described, I can tell you it’s going to be your word against his.”

“Fine,” CC sighed. “I still want to file a report. Let’s go to the station.”

We started walking towards the car, accompanied by the two officers. Then, unbelievably, Big Boss came down the sidewalk with a big, charismatic smile on his face. My sisters and I froze. Big Boss walked up to the two police officers.

“Hello, officers,” Big Boss greeted warmly. “I believe you may be looking to speak with me.”

Instinctively, CC pulled the five of us closer to him, glaring at Big Boss. “This is him,” CC stated. “This is the man who has been harassing my children.”

Officer Clarke looked up at Big Boss in surprise. “Are you Robert Wheeler?”

“Yes, I am,” Big Boss smiled, holding out his hand. “Pleased to meet you, officers. Who do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“I’m Officer Clarke and this is Officer Maddow,” Officer Clarke said without returning the smile. “We have some questions for you, sir.”

“Yes, I’m sure you do,” Big Boss nodded. “First of all, I must apologize to you. When young Allie here called the police, I must admit I got a little panicked and left. But then I realized I had no reason to run because, you see, this whole thing has been a giant misunderstanding, and I’ll be happy to clear it all up.
