The eeriness of being in a dark capsule in outer space wasnât lost on Bernie. It was downright frightening! In a weird way, knowing Sleek was in disguise was very close to the feelings she had about aliens. Here was some unknown entity, a kind of shape-shifter that was on the ship with her, all while they were hurtling through space!
It wasnât that much different than her nightmare.
Bernie gulped and tried to still her rapid breathing as she crept down the narrow hallway. She tiptoed as quietly as she possibly could past Commander Sleekwhiskerâs quarters. There was something so horrible about being so close to the enemy, one that was sleeping on just the other side of that door. It made the fur on her arms stand on end. She noticed that the commanderâs door was slightly open and couldnât help taking a stealthy peek. She had to know what was going on in there. Would the holographic disguise be off? Whoâor worse, whatâwould she see when she looked inside?
Moving as soundlessly as she could, Bernie put her eye to the crack of the door and gazed inside.
The big hamsterâs back was to her. The room was dark and she could just make out the outline of Sleekâs face. It was illuminated from below by the glow of a steady green computer screen saver on a nearby console. He was ironing one of his silver spacesuits and seemed to be muttering to himself as he drove the iron back and forth, back and forth over every single wrinkle.
Super creepy, Bernie thought.
She backed away from the door with her heart pounding. Sleekwhiskerâs obsessive neatness was disturbing. Could it have something to do with keeping up his fake appearance? Bernie wondered. She thought about Junoâs instinct that Sleek wasnât all that he appeared to be.
Boy was she right!
Bernie moved quietly, even for a mouse, as she floated into the main cockpit. A bay of lights from various touch screens were on, but everything except the largest monitorâwhich showed a vast, star-studded skyâappeared to be in sleep mode.
Okay, now where is it? Bernie wondered.
She crept over to Sleekâs station and checked all around the console for something resembling a radio. Finally, after some stressful searching, she spotted a small box with a transmitter directly beneath a navigation computer.
Her paw had just brushed the edge of the radioâs âOnâ switch when a light suddenly filled the cockpit.
Oh no!
Bernie barely suppressed a loud squeak as she dove underneath the console counter and huddled up into a ball. Thankfully, she was very small for her age and she was able to flatten herself nicely against the far wall, keeping even her toes out of sight.
From beneath the console, Bernie saw Sleekwhiskerâs immaculately clean white slippers float into the room. She held her breath, afraid that even the sound of her breathing would give her away.
The slippers paused next to where she was hiding. Then, to her horror, she saw Sleekwhiskerâs big hand reach down and turn the âOnâ switch on the radio transmitter sheâd just been looking at moments ago.
