LORETTA YOUNG

My mother met Loretta Young in the elevator once

She was going up and Loretta Young was going down

But my mother rode with her anyway

My mother said—“I couldn’t believe it, she looked unrecognizable and like somebody’s maid.”

Of course Loretta Young was quite old at the time, and probably hadn’t anticipated being judged by someone as unforgiving as my mother

I remember Loretta Young used to have a TV show, where she introduced dramas, and she would wear a gigantic pluffed up A-line dress like women used to wear in the fifties, like something out of Gone With the Wind but designed by Chanel or Yves Saint Laurent

She always had a very big smile, did Loretta Young

But apparently that smile was gone when she met my mother

My mother was always very class conscious, even though she was the daughter of a drunken farmer who died in a barn fire, and a schoolteacher mother

I think my mother was pleased to know that she was better preserved than Loretta Young and that indeed, a farm girl could some day grow up to pass judgment on a movie star

Life offers us small consolations, and too few, so we must take them while we can
