JENNA

Control Panel > Desktop > Show Hidden Files.

One of the tech guys in the newsroom had taught Jenna about invisible files when she’d gone undercover as a legal assistant in the courthouse, investigating allegations of a corrupt judge and his involvement in a blackmail scandal. The files she had found hidden on his computer had revealed vital documents of evidence that would have sent notorious, local gang members to prison for a very long time. Only the judge had chosen to make that evidence disappear and, ultimately, the gang to walk free. Jenna had found out why in the end: the gang had been blackmailing him. He’d chosen to save himself and his own sordid secrets about the affair he’d been having with the young male office intern behind his wife and children’s backs.

It turned out that the files she had found had been enough to incriminate both the judge and the gang in the end.

She almost hadn’t done it tonight.

She’d almost clicked off and let the computer go back to sleep mode, because her search had been so futile. Scrolling through all Duncan’s social media posts and private messages, she found nothing. No hints of flirtation, or anything else that seemed inappropriate.

The perfect husband.

Yet he’d taken the time and the effort to delete his search history, so he must have something to hide?

She had only searched for hidden files out of habit, running those words through the system as a very last resort on every computer she searched before she gave up.

BINGO.

There it is.

Jenna looks at the small blue folder that appears on the screen, only becoming visible when she hovers her mouse across it. She pauses, daring herself to be brave and look. Bracing herself for what she might find when she does.

Is this where Duncan is hiding the intimate details of his dirty little secret, evidence of his cliche, flirtatious messages to another woman, perhaps a couple of nude photos he’d been sent or sent to her?

She opens the file.

The first page is a list of women’s names, which are all dated. She falters, wondering if it’s not one affair she’s stumbled upon here, but a whole conquest of indiscretions that he’s logged down like some kind of trophy list. Women he’d met on a dating app perhaps and had one-night stands with. Only as Jenna makes her way down the list of names, she stops when she reaches one that is familiar to her.

Lizzy Day.

She bristles, thinking that it can’t be the same Lizzy Day that she knows. Because that Lizzy has only just turned eighteen, and she only knows her because she interviewed her once, shortly after she had been out at a club celebrating her eighteenth birthday, when she’d been spiked.

Lizzy had made it to the toilets before she’d passed out and, luckily, it had been her friends who had found her and managed to call an ambulance and get her straight to hospital.

They’d acted so quickly that the doctors were able to do a toxicology report and confirm that she’d been spiked with GHB.
