Here was the horrific reason why my dad, all those years earlier, had shrugged and said, “They were there at the beginning of the war but they had gone by the end.”

I stared at the word “convoy”. It meant a train of cattle-trucks with all of those people – men, women and children – squeezed inside. Pulling out of a station in Paris and taking five days to travel through France, across Germany and into Poland: a journey of 1,500 km.

I searched online for more information about Convoy 62 and eventually found a memoir written by a man called Henry Bily – one of the other prisoners on board. Here is his description of the awful journey:

[T]he children cried endlessly. They were hungry, they were afraid and they were tired. They had never been through such a nightmare, or experienced such a stench. Or such a noise! How many hours had passed? Already, half of the people in our truck seemed completely listless. Of the other half, how many were even lucid? As for me, after finishing the bread that I was given at the beginning of our journey, I was beginning to feel very hungry…
