§ 16. First and Final...

To celebrate my victory in the team exam, mom prepared an extravagant feast.

The dining table was made much livelier by the addition of two people. Most of the noise was coming from my parents, though.

Sasha had mumbled something about not understanding why she had to participate in the celebration of her defeat, but she fell silent the moment she took a bite of mom’s cooking. As I’d thought, mom’s cooking was delicious even by this era’s standards.

“So, how’d it happen?” mom asked Sasha curiously. “What did Anos say when he invited you to his team?”

In the end, dispelling mom’s misunderstanding had proven far too difficult. It was now Sasha’s turn to be subjected to a barrage of questions, just as Misha had been.

“He didn’t say anything special,” Sasha replied somewhat stiffly. “‘Become my follower,’ or something like that.”

“Awaaaaaaah! Become my follower? Become my follower?! How’s a girl supposed to resist such awkward charm?! This lady-killeeerrr!” mom shrieked.

Sasha looked as though she were at a loss for what to do.

“Aaand?” mom pressed. “Why did little Anos want you to join him?”

Sasha’s brow twitched. “For no particular reason. Probably because I’m an asset.”

“Oho? What was that pause just now? Something’s fishy... How did it really go, Misha?”

Misha swallowed her salad before replying. “‘Your Magic Eyes were beautiful’...?”

“A... A pickup line like that would make anyone fall head over heels in an instant! Anos is a natural philanderer! The contrast between awkward and smooth is too much, you little charmer!”

Come to think of it, Misha must have heard everything over Leaks. It was standard to cast it alongside Gyze, so I must have used it without thinking.

“Misha, please,” Sasha snapped, looking right at her sister. “Can you not say such unnecessary things?”

“Was I not supposed to?” Misha asked, staring back.

Startled, Sasha looked away. “Forget it.”

Hmm. She seemed to have surprised herself by speaking directly to Misha while they were supposed to be fighting. Mom, of course, completely misunderstood the exchange and looked between the two of them anxiously. Dad, meanwhile, glanced casually in my direction and gave me a sage nod—as though to say he had nothing more to teach me.

Good grief. After Misha’s initial visit, I’d tried to explain that Misha wasn’t my betrothed, but mom had sobbed at the thought of us breaking up and wouldn’t hear a word of it. Oh well, it was just a harmless misunderstanding. I’d find the right time to clear things up eventually.

And so, the lively dinner came to a close, and it was time for me to see my teammates off. After a quick word with dad in his workshop, I returned to the storefront to find Sasha and Misha waiting for me.

“...”

“...”

The silence was deafening. Misha wasn’t very talkative to begin with, but it was unlike Sasha to be so quiet. It sure felt strange seeing her like this. Her talk of Misha being a worthless puppet had made me think they were on bad terms, but she occasionally revealed an attitude that made me think otherwise.
