Forgiveness
Forgiveness is one of those tricky concepts thatâs easy to understand on the surface, but difficult and confusing to do in reality. As I see it, forgiveness is built into the practice of mindfulness: as we notice, acknowledge and let things be, we let things go. Forgiveness is an act of letting go. A few years back I felt I had reached the point where I was ready to forgive my father for his abuse when I was a child. I still know what he did was deeply wrong and very hurtful, but I realized that the anger I harboured was only hurting me. We arranged a meeting and I told him I forgave him for sexually abusing me. Iâm not sure what he made of it, but it felt like a real lightening of some of the load Iâd been carrying â a point of transition in my personal development. I can say from my own experience that sexual abuse isnât intransigent. As the great thirteenth-century poet Rumi said: âThe wound is the place where the light enters you.â With work, healing is possible and the learning you gain from dealing with the abuse can become a source of great strength.
