Verduzco drove, with Stiletto riding shotgun. The three rebel troops rode in back.

“What’s your guess,” Stiletto asked, “on an attack before Minas throws the birthday party for his wife?”

“Highly likely,” Verduzco said. “Before we left, I asked Arencibia to contact our people in the Minas government to see if they’ve heard anything. We should know something by the time we get back.”

The camp was a madhouse of activity as Verduzco pulled the Jeep to a stop. Troops were packing, taking down tents, and throwing equipment onto trucks. Major Arencibia rushed over as Verduzco, Stiletto, and the team hopped out.

“I talked to our people in the palace,” Arencibia said. “The army has orders to hit us as hard as they can before the party, but they also want us out of sight when the United Nations team arrives.”

“Okay.”

“I left your tent for you to pack.”

Verduzco started for his tent and Stiletto followed him, catching up with Beth along the way. She was helping to load the medical gear. He told her to save him a seat. It took ten minutes to break down Verduzco’s tent and load it onto a truck, and within a half hour of their return, they were moving out with the rest of the convoy. Stiletto had no idea where they were going, but he trusted Verduzco and Arencibia to have a plan.

Stiletto and Beth sat in the back of a crowded deuce, the rough ride jostling them against each other. The other rebels, packed into every available spot, braced themselves against the bumps.

“How did it go?” Beth said.

Stiletto gave her the update, including the three troops who had fired on the chopper despite orders.

“That’s not good.”

“No way,” he said. He raised his voice a little as he talked about how much he liked Verduzco as a leader, hoping to plant a seed with the listening rebels that they should stay loyal and give him more time. He wasn’t sure it would work, but troops in any army gossiped like schoolgirls. Word of what Stiletto had said would spread, even if they mocked him in the retelling. Somebody would agree to try to convince his mates that they should, too.

“Do you really think you can get onto that island?”

“I’ve never broken into a prison before, but it can’t be that hard. Plus, Verduzco has almost the same plan I was thinking about. I wish he’d done something sooner, rather than hesitating.”

“It’s his kid,” Beth said. “It’s human nature. Everybody has a weakness.”

“What’s yours?” he said.

She blinked. “I’m not sure how to answer that.”

“Good. You’ll find out soon enough.”

“What’s yours?” she said.

“How much time do we have?”

She laughed.

“I’m counting on the warden,” Stiletto said, “to have a weakness of his own.”

“What if he doesn’t?”

“You heard Arencibia. He’s pissed at being abandoned at that position. Throw him some bait, and he’ll bite.”
