Rest Easy Motel. Lafayette. Louisiana.

We drove for hours, not stopping until we were sure we had put enough miles between the thugs and us. I pulled into a small mom-and-pop motel with a big red vacancy sign in the window.

“What do you think of this one?”

“Anything is good. I’m starving and your dog is too.”

“Sit tight and I’ll get us a room.” I ran into the office—the same office they’d had in the fifties—checked us in under a phony name and paid cash. I came running out with a key card for an efficiency unit farthest from the road.

“What’s our number?” asked Luca.

“Do you have a preference?”

“No.” He laughed.

I drove past all the other rooms—two of them with vehicles in front—and parked in front of one-fifteen. “This is our room. Supposed to have a kitchen with a fridge and stove.”

“How much is this dump costing per day?” asked Luca.

“Sixty-five.”

“Shit, Daisy. We can’t afford to be here for more than a fuckin minute.”

“I’ll talk to Wylene in the morning, and she’ll come up with something else. Worst comes to worst, I might have to talk to my father.”

Luca made a face. “I don’t want other people involved in my business.”

“I’m not worrying about it tonight. Let’s get the groceries put away and get some sleep. We should be safe here for the time being.”

While Luca took Fudge for a run around the parking lot, I hauled the groceries into the room and put the perishables into the fridge. The beer wasn’t completely warm, and I set two cans on the round table. I opened mine and chugged half of it down. So thirsty and I wasn’t a big beer drinker.

Luca came in and smiled. “Hey, we’re having a beer to celebrate our new hideout.”

I opened the cupboard and found a couple of bowls big enough for Fudge. I filled one up with kibble and one with water and set them down in front of her.

Luca was right. My dog was starving. Thirsty too. She lapped up most of the water in her bowl. Spilled the rest on the floor.

As we sat down at the table together, a sense of relief washed over me. For the first time in days, I felt like we were safe. The sound of Fudge’s tail wagging against the ancient linoleum floor and the soft hum of the mini fridge was all that could be heard in the small room.

Luca cracked open his semi-warm beer and took a deep swig, letting out an audible sigh of contentment. “This is exactly what we needed,” he said, smiling at me. “A little hideout where we can catch our breath and figure out our next move.”

I nodded in agreement, taking a sip of my beer. The bubbly liquid felt refreshing on my dry throat. “I just hope Wylene can come up with something more permanent for you,” I said, placing my beer back down on the table. “I don't want to have to go crawling back to my father for help.
