Hours later, after what seemed an eternity to Isabella, Johan returned. He came into the bedroom, kissed her forehead, and knelt beside her bed.

She whispered, “I’m sorry for what I said, Johan.”

He placed his finger on her lips, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a small paper-wrapped package.

Isabella pushed upright, leaning against the headboard. “Johan, what is this?”

A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he handed it to her.

She opened it and gasped. Inside, two candy-coated objects glistened in the candlelight. Wide-eyed, Isabella stared at Johan. “Comfits! Cherry comfits! Oh, where did you find them, Johan?”

“I went to the confectioner’s shop, the one over by Market Square. At first, he told me the prophet had confiscated his sweets and his sugar. But when I told him my pregnant wife craved one small sweet, he winked, said, ‘Wait right there,’ and slipped into a back room.

“A moment later, he returned with these. He told me his son and daughter had left with the Catholics and had taken his grandchildren with them. He had no little ones to enjoy his sweets. These were the last he had. So here they are, for you.”

Johan looked away for a moment and then back into Isabella’s eyes. A tear glistened. “I apologize for speaking to you in such a harsh manner. I will never do it again.”

Isabella smiled at her husband. Love shone from his eyes, his wonderful blue eyes. And then she knew God had given her an incredible gift in this man—a man who treated her with kindness and generosity. He was not of noble birth, but he was splendid in all his ways. This simple gift revealed to Isabella, the depth of his love for her and she knew she would not fear, no matter what came. He would keep her and their baby safe. She rolled the sweets back in the paper.

“Aren’t you going to eat them, my dearest?”

“No, Johan. I will keep them forever. Whenever I am feeling cross or unhappy, I will look at them and remind myself that God has blessed me with a wonderful husband. Thank you, thank you, Johan.” She threw her arms around him and she was no longer afraid.
