Erica put the letter down slowly, realizing the impact it would have on Lottie and how hard it would be to share it with her.

This is just the thing I have been trying to avoid, she thought. She may not want to include it in her memoirs, for obvious reasons, so why even show it to her?

The answer came as if in Lottie’s own voice, “I will not be treated like a child. Don’t talk down to me and don’t hold anything back!”

“How well I know you, Lottie,” said Erica aloud.

She wondered hopefully if Lottie’s mother might have been mistaken? But, just having her mother suspect it, even if it wasn’t so, would be upsetting to her, thought Erica.

The letter was just plain upsetting, no matter how one looked at it. Erica didn’t sleep well that night.
