“Papa doesn’t much care for John, though he tries to hide it,” Katherine wrote in her note. “I think it’s because John is not afraid of him the way the rest of the young men around here are. Were they always that way? Not John. I remember seeing him talk to the men after church even when he was still in short britches. I tell you what, when John talks to Papa about business, Papa has to sit up and listen whether he likes it or not. Did you know the Hoffman family practically founded this town? They certainly own enough of it now, or so it seems.”

Katherine went on with the news about the greatness of her soon-to-be husband, his family, his pets, and his every thought. Gerda wouldn’t have been all that surprised to read that the Hoffman family outhouses didn’t need ventilation.

How unlike her own experience, Gerda thought, when it was her turn to fall in love and start a family. Fritz too had been unafraid of Papa Drueke, but that hadn’t inspired respect.
