CHAPTER 14

After overhearing Remy’s interaction with that Roland character, Colby had decided not to bother her by asking more about her ideas for the market. Besides, he didn’t know how to ask without feeling like he was taking advantage of her goodwill. She obviously wanted to be paid for her ideas, and here he was trying to get them for free.

He came up with this long speech to offer to pay for her services, but then she showed up with a huge box in her hands.

“What’s this?” he asked.

“I made a couple versions of baskets for the charcuteries,” she said, opening the box. She pulled out red-and-white checkered fabric baskets with different types of glass jars and small packaged cracker boxes and waxed cheeses.

“Is that caviar?” Colby picked up a jar from the first basket.

“And uni roe, along with mignonette sauce for oysters, lemons, and locally grown fresh herbs.” She pointed to a tiny glass jar. “I also made a crab cheese spread with the crab from yesterday’s catch, a pickled cucumber salad, and added really great olives. I put in a dry local Chardonnay to compliment all the flavors. Oh, and a French baguette.”

“I thought charcuteries were crackers and cheese.” He picked up a glass bottle with a familiar reddish color inside. “You added cocktail sauce?” It was a different brand than they had carried.

“Good cocktail sauce,” she said, plucking the bottle from his hands and placing it back into the basket. “Charcuterie is about fresh ingredients. You could call this basket a sea-cuterie.”

He cringed inside at the cheesy name but kept his feelings to himself. “Do you really think someone’s going to want to spend the money on all of this while buying lobsters?” He didn’t think so.

“People come to Blueberry Bay to get away and celebrate life,” Remy said. “They want to spend their money on good food that they don’t normally get.”

Was she right?

“And the baskets?” He rubbed his fingers along the fabric. “They must’ve cost a fortune.”

She shook her head. “I sewed them together in like five minutes.”

“You made these?” He picked one up. They were steadier than he expected.

She nodded.

The bell on the front door hit the glass, and a couple came into the market.

“Hello, can we help you?” Remy asked.

“We’re here for the lobster!” the gentleman said with gusto.

“Well, you came to the right place.”

“Oh, Don, look,” the woman said, passing the baskets. “Do you think we should pick something like this up for when Gail and Jean come?”

The man tapped his chin with his finger, then nodded. “That’s a good idea.”

Remy pulled out a notecard from the basket. “Here’s a list of the extras you’ll want to grab at the fish counter.”

“You carry fresh oysters?” The woman looked impressed.

Remy nodded. “Only fresh.”

This made the woman happier, Colby noticed.

“How are you folks doing today?” Colby asked as they walked up to the counter. “You here visiting?”

The couple nodded. “We’re staying at the Blueberry Bay Cottages,” she said. “Oh, is that the Jacob O’Neill?” She pointed to the mural.
