Chapter Thirty

Louise sensed everyone in the office stopping as Finch walked over to her desk. He’d been at the station many times before, but that didn’t take away the edge of having him here, especially after her earlier meeting with Coulson and Amira. ‘DCI Finch. To what do we owe this honour?’ she said, emphasising ‘honour’ with as much sarcasm as she was able to muster.

‘The honour is all mine, Louise, as always. I thought I’d offer my personal help on this case, due to its severity,’ said Finch. His attempts at displaying his authority – the wide-leg stance, the formal tone of his voice – were as blatant as his overpowering aftershave.

Everyone might have returned to their work, but Louise knew they were still listening. Finch had all but declared he was here to save the day, but Louise refused to be provoked in her own station by him. She took solace from her earlier meeting with her two colleagues. For once, she knew things Finch didn’t and, hopefully, very soon his interference would be a thing of the past.

‘I have somewhere to be, Tim, but Greg and Tracey can update you,’ said Louise, enjoying the frown of displeasure that crossed Finch’s brow. ‘I’m sure they could assign you a task,’ she added, as a parting shot.
