The comparison of the differences between the lighter (low predicted value) and darker (high predicted value) bars in both figures delivers a simple message: controlling for all other influences, men’s attitudes are primarily driven by their age and women’s only by their education. Specifically, as the age of male respondents increases, their predicted scores on the maternal responsibility shift from .51 at age 28 to .35 at age 87—a 16 percentage point change in the levels of acceptance of women in the public sphere. For women, similarly, moving across almost the entire range of education from grade school to Master’s degree triggers a corresponding 19 percentage point increase in female respondents’ scores on the maternal responsibility scale, from .45 to .64.
