Chapter 31

Six months later, December 1981

Colón, Panama

Peace... Lilah cherished the feeling. For half a year, there had been no painful reminders of the past around her, only the soothing environs of the courts. She also worked her backside off for the Peter Kingsley Company. It got to the point she was almost seeing balance sheets in her sleep, but Lilah didn’t mind. To her surprise, she found herself looking forward to Brad’s letters. He sounded really nice in the notes he sent, asking intelligent questions and raising objections only when valid. Lilah found the entire exchange intellectually stimulating. She was even anticipating their eventual meeting with some amount of pleasure.

Lilah waited until Harry returned stateside before joining the Kingsleys in Panama. A week prior to her departure from New York, Temple did a couple of pressers where he warned rogue actors and nations any attempt to harm American citizens on foreign lands would provoke his wrath. The president wouldn’t invite political suicide for himself and legal trouble for his friends by singling out certain rivals without proof, but at the first hint of wrongdoing, Temple would crack down.

Besides military action, the financial holdings of the transgressors would be targeted, and the fortunes of many of the world’s despots were tied up in the Western banking system. The message would’ve been heard loud and clear by those who needed to hear, including governments supportive of Sanders. The criminal oilman would know he couldn’t strike anywhere on the planet without his former pals turning him in. All he could do was wait and watch and use legitimate business tactics to counter his adversaries. And yeah, count days until the end of the Temple presidency.

The alliance would also be marking off days in the tiny office in Panama. Very tiny. Only a couple of clerks could comfortably work in the space. More room was needed, but the division of assets left Brad and his brothers poor in actual cash. The New Washington Hotel in Colón had an air of shabby grandeur and would function as both office and residence until they could afford something of their own. The largest and most comfortable of the rented suites were allotted to Lilah and Patrice.

Brad decided to celebrate Lilah’s arrival with wine under the stars. They stood on the balcony, holding glasses. Assured she was safe enough with her fiancé, her bodyguards retired for the night. As far as the Kingsleys knew, the extra protection was because of potential attacks to destroy the fledgling network. They were ignorant of Lilah’s abduction as a teenager and the car accident Sanders arranged for her. She wasn’t ready yet to share with her fiancé that part of her life.

Still, Brad seemed like a nice man. Lilah studied him, wondering why on earth she reacted so badly to his touch before. He checked off most of the boxes a woman might’ve hoped for in a husband. Then there were the elegant good looks and manner.

The warm breeze from the Atlantic stirred her hair.
